Benefits of Electric Motor Scooters Outweigh Limitations
Don't Let a Few Mobile Scooter Limitations Persuade You From Enjoying the Bigger Picture: Freedom
There's no doubt that the compact, battery-operated electric motor scooters of today outperform
past and present folding wheelchairs. This is of course, due to the automation and accessibility that today's personal electric motor scooter offers. But this automation can be a bit misleading to those who are unfamiliar with
them. Although these 3 wheel and 4 wheel machines eliminate manual propulsion, they still require an ability to use upper-body strength for
steering and maintaining balance. Designed more for transport and less for medical body support, disability motor
scooters may also require alternative routing.
This is mainly because mobile scooters are longer than traditional wheelchairs. As a result, they're not always appropriate or functional in
environments designed for wheelchairs. They may be difficult to turn around tight corners or they may not be liftable in mobile environments like
vans or busses. These types of limits are some of the reasons why people may shy from using them.
These limits are really a small price to pay for the freedom, the speed, and the strain-free mobility that these machines can offer. Anyone who
can support the upper-body, adequately steer a moving vehicle, and periodically shift body weight to maintain balance is a prime candidate for a
mobility scooter. And accessibility, or rather the lack of, can be compensated for by devising and using alternative travel routes.
Although architects and planners are progressively designing alternative pathways, some areas are still not accessible by either the wheelchair
or motor scooter. At present however, most publicly available doorways, curbs, ramps, and public rest rooms are accessible for not only
wheelchair users, but also motor scooter users as well. We predict that in the near future, accessibility for motor
scooters will increase, as this mode of travel gains in popularity among a growing disabled population.
