Do You Qualify For A Medical Electric Scooter
Some Restrictions May Prevent Electric Scooter Insurance Coverage
Nowadays, we see electric medical scooters all over the
place - and for good reason! Thanks to low cost, easy maneuvering, and high convenience, mobility scooters are becoming ever more popular than
before. They're becoming so popular in fact, that even non-disabled persons are enjoying them and they use them for travel as well for
convenience. Although this is good for the motor scooter industry, this can cause some confusion when it comes time to
make a distinction between who really needs an electric medical scooter and who doesn't.
As it currently stands, Medicare has some pretty strict rules about who can use a 3 wheel or 4 wheel disability motor scooter and who can't
(under their coverage). This of course is a moot point for those who aren't insured by Medicare. But those who are insured by Medicare may find
themselves having to fight for it. Under Medicare, inside use of a personal scooter is not considered necessary by walking individuals. This
insurance company believes that if a person can walk inside the home, that person can walk outside the home as well - despite the fact that the
person may suffer from heart problems or severe arthritis. To protect the health interests of qualifying individuals, several disability
"watch-dog" groups are pressing Medicare to change its policy entirely, or at least portions of it that affect disabled persons who could truly
benefit from a folding, battery-operated motor scooter.
It's important for institutions like Medicare to remember that just because one group of people choose to use a light compact mobility scooter
for convenience, that convenience shouldn't be used as a disqualifying determinant. If we continued to make health decisions by the actions of
others, we would be prone to disqualify individuals from taking prescribed vitamins simply because others take them to feel better. Or we would
be prone to disqualify individuals from using therapeutic spas, simply because others use them for entertainment!
